What is Ofcom doing about the problem of inadvertent mobile roaming in Northern Ireland?
Ofcom has worked with the UK mobile operators and the Republic of Ireland’s telecoms regulator – ComReg – to try to minimise the impact of inadvertent roaming on consumers in border areas.
In terms of roaming costs, we have seen mobile networks in the UK and the Republic of Ireland introduce special tariffs which reduce the cost of making and receiving roaming calls well below the maximum rates set by the European Parliament in 2007.
In terms of mobile coverage, Ofcom has also started a research project looking at the reasons for mobile not-spots across the UK and how they can be reduced.
In Northern Ireland that research will look at border areas which have traditionally experienced inadvertent roaming.
